Addiction is Self-Compassion That's Gone Out of Control
When life gets out of hand people turn to comfort to help manage stress. For some folks, this built-in system of self care works really well, and for some of us it can take on a life of its own. Some people never learned healthy tools for stress management when they were growing up, and now turn to behaviors so extreme they end up doing more harm than good. When working with clients who struggle with addictions, be they to a substance, behavior, or person, I approach the issue from a place of compassionate understanding and work to support a person's strengths rather than tearing them down at their weakest points.
